We wish more UK buyers heard this before they signed: the vendor with the best pitch is rarely the one that leaves you with tests you can run yourself.
To choose a software testing company in the UK, compare providers on four things: the automation they leave in your repository, their experience with your regulator and UK data protection rules, how they staff your working hours, and whether they price by outcome or only by headcount. This guide sets out how we compared UK QA providers, a shortlist, which firms suit automation consulting and large digital transformation work, and city-level lists for London, Manchester and Birmingham.
Astaqc and TestInspector.ai. Astaqc provides experienced QA talent to UK clients from its head office in Mumbai, India; our post on building a scalable QA team in the UK explains the model. TestInspector.ai can create, run and monitor your tests without any human intervention: humans do the testing while the AI monitors the regressions. TestInspector.ai starts at USD 349.
A note on bias: Astaqc publishes this list and Astaqc is on it. We list ourselves first and apply the same criteria to our own offer as to everyone else's.
We did not score providers or collect ratings. Instead, we set out the questions a UK buyer should ask every provider, including us. Use them to build your own shortlist.
| Criterion | What to ask | Why it matters in the UK |
|---|---|---|
| Automation ownership | Does the test code live in our repository and run in our CI? | You keep the asset if you change provider or bring QA in-house |
| Regulation | Have you tested for FCA-regulated firms, the NHS or public sector services? | Each brings its own evidence, security and audit requirements |
| Data protection | How do you handle test data under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018? | Production data in test environments is a common compliance gap |
| Accessibility | Do you test against WCAG 2.2 with screen readers? | Public sector bodies have legal accessibility duties, and many private buyers now ask for the same |
| Working hours | Which hours will the team cover, and who joins our stand-ups? | Offshore teams need a clear overlap with the UK day |
| Commercial model | Do you price by outcome, by project or only by headcount? | Headcount pricing alone gives the provider no reason to automate |
Under the off-payroll working rules (IR35), how you engage individual contractors also matters. The rules apply when a worker provides services through their own intermediary, so buying testing as a managed service from a company is treated differently from hiring contractors through one. Ask your provider which model they are offering, and take advice on your own case.
The shortlist below mixes UK-based testing consultancies and larger firms with UK delivery. It is not a ranking. Astaqc is listed first because we publish this page; the rest are in alphabetical order.
A QA consultancy with its head office in Mumbai, India, and the team behind TestInspector.ai. Astaqc covers manual, automation, performance and security testing, and can place QA engineers inside your team. Over a million QA hours delivered.
Fits: UK product teams that want an offshore QA team with tests kept in their own repository. Check: the overlap with your working day, since our hours of 9am to 6pm IST fall in the UK morning.
A quality engineering company, formerly Qualitest Group, with a London office and a focus on regulated industries. Check: fit for a smaller product team and who owns your account day to day.
A UK quality engineering consultancy offering test automation, performance testing and QA consulting. Check: whether delivery is onshore, offshore or mixed for your engagement.
A UK technology consultancy formed when Ten10 and Scale Factory merged, with a quality engineering practice and a tech academy. Check: the experience level of the people placed on your project.
A software testing company with a London office, offering functional, automation, performance and security testing. Check: automation framework choices and handover terms.
A UK-based, independent and employee-owned software testing company. Check: capacity for large automation programmes alongside manual testing.
Buyers looking for the best QA automation consulting firms in the UK usually want one of two things: a framework built for them, or a team that improves the automation they already have. The questions differ for each.
A good automation consultant leaves you needing them less over time. If the proposal does not include knowledge transfer, ask why.
Astaqc's test automation services build frameworks in your repository. If you want regression coverage without building a framework, TestInspector.ai creates tests from plain-language chat and exports them to Playwright TypeScript, Selenium IDE or Gherkin.
Large digital transformation programmes, such as moving a bank's core platform, rebuilding a public service or replacing an ERP system, need a different kind of QA partner from a product team shipping weekly.
Ask any candidate for a redacted test strategy from a programme of similar size. Astaqc's performance testing and security testing services are often brought in for specific workstreams within larger programmes.
Searches for UK testing labs recommended by product design engineers usually mean one of two different things, so start by checking which you need.
Connected products often need both: a lab for the hardware and a software testing partner for the companion app, the APIs and the cloud platform. Make sure the two scopes meet, especially for pairing, firmware updates and data sync.
Astaqc tests the software side, including mobile app testing for companion apps. We do not offer physical product or hardware compliance testing.
Most UK testing work is delivered remotely or hybrid, so city matters less than it used to. It still matters when you need people on site, or when you want a provider who knows the local market.
| City | Typical buyers | City list |
|---|---|---|
| London | Fintech, financial services, media, e-commerce and scale-ups | Top software testing companies in London |
| Manchester | Digital agencies, e-commerce, media and a growing fintech and healthtech scene | Top software testing companies in Manchester |
| Birmingham | Financial services, professional services, manufacturing and public sector | Top software testing companies in Birmingham |
For an offshore team, the time difference is the main planning point. India is 4 hours 30 minutes ahead of the UK during British Summer Time and 5 hours 30 minutes ahead during GMT. Astaqc's hours of 9am to 6pm IST therefore cover the UK morning, so plan hand-offs and stand-ups early in the UK day.
The best company for you depends on your regulator, platforms, budget and how much you want to own. Shortlist providers that keep automation in your repository, have tested for your sector, handle test data under UK GDPR, and give you a clear overlap with your working hours. Confirm the fit with a short paid pilot.
Look for firms that build automation in your repository, run it in your CI, measure flakiness and run time, and include a plan to hand ownership back to your team. Ask for a sample framework and a reference from a client with a similar stack.
Leading partners for transformation work show experience with multi-supplier test strategy, integration and data migration testing, non-functional testing at scale and programme governance. Ask for a redacted test strategy from a programme of similar size.
For physical products, engineers usually look for UKAS-accredited labs for safety, EMC and compliance testing. For the software around a product, such as companion apps and cloud services, you need an independent software testing company. Connected products often need both.
If you are comparing software testing companies in the UK, we can review your scope and propose a short paid pilot that runs in your repository and your CI.
